Our selection of hikes in the Embrun region
From Embrun town center to Embrun lake
Difficulty : easy (walking on a path and small paved road). Short steep section at the start (descent) and at the end (ascent).
Accessible : all year round except after heavy rain (muddy path).
Departure : from the Esplanade de la Résistance (Leader Price supermarket car park).
Route : At the far end of the Esplanade de la Résistance, a dirt path winds down to the Côte Chamois crossroads. Continue straight on the small road along a canal. At the Durance, turn right and continue along the dike to the lake (a pedestrian path allows you to pass under the Clapière bridge).
Return via the same route. A welcome fountain just before the ascent of Les Moulineaux.
Loop via Chalvet and Caléyère
Difficulty : easy (walking on a small paved road). However, it’s best to be somewhat accustomed to walking as this circuit “climbs” throughout the first part…, offering superb views of the town and its surroundings.
Accessible : all year round.
Duration : 3 hours
Departure : from the train station.
Route : Cross the footbridge to reach Avenue du Général Nicolas. Turn right and go up the small road towards Chalvet. Always follow the main road (many side roads). After the hamlet of Les Maures, the road becomes steeper over two hairpin bends (triathlon cycling route!). Once on flat ground again, cross the Barthelons farm then continue on the road that descends slightly to the Caleyère junction. Then a more direct descent through residential areas to the starting point.
The Roc Loop
Difficulty : easy (walking on a path and small paved road). Short steep section at the start (descent) and at the end (ascent).
Accessible : all year round. After heavy rain, take the small road of Côte Chamois rather than the Chemin des Moulineaux which can be very muddy.
Duration : 1 hour 30 minutes
Departure : from the Esplanade de la Résistance (Leader Price supermarket car park).
Route : At the far end of the esplanade, a dirt path winds down to the Côte Chamois crossroads. Continue straight on the small road along a canal. At the Durance, turn left to follow the dike. Just before the bridge of the future bypass, turn left. Follow the small road (passing a sheepfold, then along the municipal stadium) to the St André road. Turn left then left again 50m further. Walk through the gardens to the Moulineaux bridge. Go back up the slope descended at the start.
Towards L’Estang
Difficulty : easy (Walking on a small paved road and agricultural path)
Accessible : all year round. In winter, the last part is often very icy.
Duration : 1 hour 30 minutes
Departure : from Embrun train station car park.
Route : Cross the national road and pass in front of the war memorial, then turn right onto the Crévoux road (Rue Edouard Przybylski). Follow this road for about 1 km. On the descent, after the two hairpin bends, take the small road left towards the Paradis district. Soon, the road enters an area of fields and orchards. Possibility to visit Mr. and Mrs. Viossat’s farm (sheep cheese). After the farm, the road turns into an agricultural track. Follow the canal then turn left and continue to the Durance. Rafts and kayaks pass by in summer. Return via the same route.
The Lake Loop
Difficulty : very easy (flat walk).
Accessible : all year round. Also very pleasant in winter when the lake is completely frozen.
Duration : 40 minutes
Departure : from the car park behind the swimming pool (shaded and free).
Route : Access the promenade dike (pedestrian up to the Alpine Nautical Club) then return via the small Chadenas road. Try it as a jog for the more courageous.
Mount Guillaume
Difficulty : trail hike, easy up to the Seyères chapel (halfway) then more challenging. No particular difficulty, however…
Accessible : from late spring until the first snows.
Duration : 5 hours (including 3 hours of ascent) for 965 m elevation gain. Alt. 2550 m
Departure : from the Bois Vezin car park. (Accessible in 30 minutes by car via the hamlets of Caleyère and Château de Caleyère.)
Route: With your back to the valley, take the track that goes left then the path immediately to the right: this is the Widman trail, which you will follow to the summit where a magnificent panorama awaits you over the entire Embrun region and Lake Serre-Ponçon, as well as the Gapençais to the south, the Guillestrois and the Queyras to the North-East. Descent via the same route.
